Meet a member of staff

I'm John and I'm the Deputy Visitor Experience Manager. Along with the Visitor Experience Manager, I run the site on a day to day basis. We’re in charge of making sure all the front of house staff are in position and fully trained in the Museum, Shop and Dove Cottage, engaging with visitors and setting up for events. It sounds like a cliché, but really every day is different. We meet visitors from all around the world and make sure that they have a world-class experience. Ensuring that this experience is maintained means we do a lot of the unseen work: for example, picking up litter, restocking leaflets and making sure interactive displays in the museum are working.

My role has developed since I began working here full-time in 2008, and in that time I’ve learnt a great deal about Wordsworth, which has been useful for answering questions and giving guided tours of Dove Cottage. We’ve recently been working closely with front of house teams at other Lake District arts and heritage organisations, which are members of the Cumbria Museum Consortium. This has enabled us to share ideas and develop skills, making us feel part of Cumbria’s tourism on a wider scale.
