Wordsworth's Hawkshead

23 July 2017

Contact us to book

William Wordsworth attended Hawkshead Grammar School from 1779 until 1787, and it was during these years that he first began composing poetry, taking inspiration from the countryside and wildlife around him. These years also provided the material for the first book of The Prelude, including the infamous boat-stealing scene.

Discover the village and surrounding area through his eyes in this easy, 2.5 mile (4km) walk.  The walk is expected to take approximately 1.5 hours, and appropriate footwear is advised.

Meet your Lake District National Park Authority guide at the LDNP Hawkshead Car Park by 10.30am.

Cost: Free - boat fare and parking charges apply

In partnership with the Lake District National Park Authority, this summer we are offering a series of walks inspired by Wordsworth and his poems.  There are three locations – Ullswater, Hawkshead, and Grasmere – and ten walks between March and September.  All are led by experienced and friendly LDNP volunteers, with guidance and literary information from the Wordsworth Trust.
