The Wordsworth Trust offers bespoke residential packages for schools, ideal for those who have to travel from outside Cumbria to visit Dove Cottage. We work in partnership with local accommodation providers to offer a range of truly immersive experiences in the heart of the Lake District, including creative writing and art activities, guided walks, film screenings – all related to the landscape and the Romantic poets. From a weekend visit to inspire Creative Writing A-level students to GCSE groups getting to grips with Representative Romantic Poetry, our residential offer is uniquely tailored to suit your class.


We work with the following residential venues to offer bespoke school packages, including workshops at the hostel, guided walks from the hostel, and evening activities. Grasmere Independent Hostel – a short distance from Dove Cottage, this small comfortable hostel is ideal for VI form groups and classes of up to 24 students.  The hostel offers small dorms, en-suite facilities, fully equipped self-catering kitchen, dining room, common room, laundry, sauna, bike storage, drying room and a barbeque patio area.

Thorney How within walking distance of Dove Cottage, Thorney How can cater for up to 42 people, accommodated in a total of 10 bedrooms ranging from 2 beds to 6 beds per room. All wash room facilities are shared and bed linen is provided. Just behind Thorney How sits Helm Crag, with stunning views across the Grasmere valley and surrounding fells. Electric and standard bike hire, drying room, and spacious grounds complete the experience.

Derwentwater Independent Hostel  –15 miles from Dove Cottage. Overlooking Derwent Water, in the dramatic Borrowdale Valley, this 88-bed Georgian mansion, with its wildlife-rich grounds, impressive waterfall (with hydro-power plant), spectacular views, and fascinating history, has been welcoming school and university groups for over 50 years. The delicious full-board option is very popular, but a well-equipped self-catering kitchen is also available.

Rydal Hall Youth Centre – the Youth Centre sleeps a total of 29 in bunk bed dormitory style accommodation across four rooms. The two smaller dorms are en suite; and there is a communal kitchen and common room on the first floor. With generous discounts for mid-week and youth group bookings, bookings are taken for exclusive use of the Youth Centre. Pillows and pillow cases are provided but guests need to bring their own towels, tea towels and sleeping bags/duvets.

Costs for accommodation are set by individual venues and the Wordsworth Trust accepts no responsibility for the accommodation provided. If you wish to stay elsewhere we are happy to work with you to provide a package to suit your group.

  • Class activities in the Wordsworth Museum
  • Guided walks near to Dove Cottage and residential venues, linking inspiration to the landscape
  • Poetry and creative writing workshops, either at the hostel or at the museum
  • Classes on literature, history and art, using our nationally-recognised collection of manuscripts, art and historic objects
  • Evening film screenings and discussions

These costs are for activities led by Wordsworth Trust staff and do not include accommodation or catering. To support your visit we provide Risk Assessments, free Dove Cottage familiarisation visit for teachers, follow-up activities for each workshop, and free coach parking for school groups at Dove Cottage.
