Event Details

Grasmere History Group meets monthly to discuss local history in a friendly gathering. New members from near or far are welcome, and a speaker or discussion topic is usually arranged in advance. For more information about a specific date please email enquiries@wordsworth.org.uk.

We have a wide range of interests: in recent years we have produced exhibitions about Grasmere in the First World War and the early years of tourism in the Lake District, and in 2019 we published Grasmere: A History in 55 1/2 Buildings.

This month the guest speaker is Charlotte Davies (The Sankey Family Photographic Project, Signal Film and Media) who will be sharing photographs from the Sankey Collection held in Barrow. The Sankeys were a father and son duo who documented life in Barrow and Cumbria over 70 years. Starting in 1900, they captured the landscape, cultural changes, individuals, industry and tourism (plus much more). The postcards they created from their photography were posted all over the world and tell fascinating stories of the 20th century.
